PCUSA PCUSA
Dorchester Presbyterian Committees

In a Presbyterian Church, authority for most action is vested in the "Session," a group of "Elders" elected by the congregation to exercise oversight of congregational affairs (similar to the way we elect members of Congress to oversee national affairs) - representative government. In good Presbyterian fashion, the Dorchester Session handles a great deal of its business by means of committees. We find that smaller groups, comprised of those who have particular interest and competence in dealing with a subject are most effective in accomplishing needed tasks. Nine Standing Committees plus a Board of Deacons help the DPC Session do its work:

Personnel for each of the committees consists of at least one Elder appointed annually by the Session plus as many others as are deemed necessary selected by the committees from the congregation. The term of service for committee members is for one year (January-December), but members may be asked to continue in service at the request of committee chairs. It is expected that care will be taken to choose committee members on the basis of particular competencies, interests, and congregational responsibilities. The Elder(s) assigned to a committee shall serve as (co-)chairpersons for purposes of communicating with the Session - within the committee itself, responsibilities will be assigned on the basis of interest and ability.

Each committee has the option of distributing its work load to subcommittees of its own design. Each committee also has the responsibility for making budget recommendations for their own work and work related to their areas of responsibility.

There is no set schedule for meetings of the standing committees. Some, by the nature of the tasks which are confronting them at one particular moment will meet with considerable frequency. However, it is expected that the committees normally would meet at least quarterly, making regular reports on their activities to the Session.

Click on the name of the committee to see a job description for that group. Perhaps there is one or more on which the Lord is leading you, because of your talent and interest, to serve. Prayerfully consider how God wants to use you at Dorchester Presbyterian Church.

The Board of Deacons

Chaired by Jim Mallory

"The office of deacon as set forth in scripture is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, of exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, warm sympathies, and sound judgment should be chosen for this office." (Book of Order G-6.0401)

From the earliest days of the church deacons have been especially responsible for the church's ministry of compassion. When the apostles found that their primary work of teaching and preaching took so much time that they could not give adequate attention to ministering to the needy, they asked the members of the church to choose "seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom" to carry out this work. These men the apostles ordained by prayer and the laying on of hands. (Acts 6:1-6). Presumably these men were the first deacons of the church. So today deacons are elected in the Presbyterian Church to "minister to those in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress, both within and beyond the community of faith." (Book of Order, G-6.0402).

It is important that the congregation's ministry of compassion not be slighted. For this reason deacons ought to remain alert to means by which persons and groups of persons can be helped in time of sickness, poverty, injustice, or other distress. It is this kind of concern that gives rise to our Parish Plan by which we can keep in touch with our people and be aware of their needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Each Deacon is assigned a "Parish" (a group of families within the congregation). The purpose is to maintain personal contact with all church members/families. The Deacon is the communication link between the household and the church.
    • The Deacon should strive to be aware of the needs of the people in the assigned parish, crises in their lives, changes in family structures, etc. Follow up on all of the above and/or report to the church office.
    • The Deacon is to communicate the love and concern of the congregation. Make sure parish members are aware of the programs and activities of our church.
    • Each Deacon should visit the households of the assigned parish at least once a year and maintain phone contact as needed. Parish-wide get-togethers are always appropriate.
    • Those within the Parish that are shut-in or otherwise home-bound should be visited at least once per quarter; such visits may be arranged in conjunction with the pastor's distribution of the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper.
    • Be aware of birthdays and anniversaries of Parish members so good wishes can be extended.
    • Be responsible for sending Get Well and sympathy cards to sick and bereaved Parish members.
    • Deliver a church Parish Directory to each home when it is printed.
    • Pray for each Parish family.

  2. Attend Board meetings.

  3. Elect a Moderator to handle administrative tasks of the Board.

  4. Arrange for transportation to and from church activities for those who desire to participate but need such assistance. Develop a cadre of drivers willing to provide transportation to and from church events for those who need assistance.

  5. Make an initial contact with new members as assigned by the Board to get acquainted and explain the Parish system.

  6. Coordinate the delivery of flowers after worship services, preparing small arrangements in vases to deliver to members who are hospitalized or shut-in.

  7. Deliver fruit baskets, poinsettias, Easter lilies, etc. to the shut-in members of the church at appropriate times of the church year.

  8. Establish a Bereavement Committee to coordinate and provide such service as needed following a death in the congregation including, but not limited to, providing a meal at the church or home for the family following the funeral service, any transportation needed, house or other "sitting", etc.

  9. In conjunction with the Christian Education and Mission Committees, encourage the entire congregation in their own ministries of compassion by offering occasional educational opportunities offering instruction in such areas.

  10. Support a congregation-wide "prayer chain" to call attention to prayer needs as they arise.

  11. Arrange for review of worship attendance records to see if individuals/families need particular attention.

  12. Annually review the church's membership rolls, reporting to the Session any individuals whose participation (or lack thereof) would make them candidates for removal to the Inactive Roll.

  13. Undertake such other duties as may occasionally be requested by the Session.

  14. Develop an annual budget for submission to the Stewardship Committee to include the work of the Board as well as recommendations concerning funding for expenses related to the ministries of compassion of the congregation.

  15. Make recommendations to the Session concerning revisions of the Board's areas of responsibility to be reflected as standard operating procedure in the church manual.
